Wow. I guess the time has gotten away from me. Wednesday of last week (I think) we had lunch with friends . Thursday we had trip to the doctor for vaccinations for Myer and Afton and a chest x-ray for Mastewal. This trip went well and I feel like we just kind of camped out at the doctor’s office for a while. Thursdays are definitely the day to go. Our doctor also recommended someone to do Mastewal’s hair. I looked her up when we got home and then took her our and had her hair straightened. I loved it…it was so big, but she continues to like it just the way it is…no braids, no straightening. Good thing it goes back to just the way she likes it as soon as it gets wet.
Friday, my parents arrived. I was able to go out and take stuff to the goodwill. YAY! I also registered Mastewal for kindergarten and Afton for preschool. I really thought about homeschooling, but this will be the plan for right now. We still have 4-5 months to go before fall, so we’ll see. We went out Friday night with my parents to get the swing set. Seth and my dad worked on it Saturday. We then went to church gym and swim party. The children loved swimming. Although Mastewal throws herself backwards (as she does when taking a bath) and it looks like she’s drowning. I had several mini-heart attacks watching her do this numerous times in the water.
Sunday we got a late start and Seth and my dad finished the swingset. We were sad to see them leave. It’s always nice to have family here.
So this week is starting as all the others. We’ve been together 5 weeks now, and been home 4 weeks. We’re starting to settle. It’s hard, though. I can’t adequately describe it all on here (and I don’t have the time), but it’s as I expected, a little better and a little worse–if that makes any sense.
Nothing much to report. We’ve kept a similar schedule the past two days. Breakfast, “get ready”, read books, Sesame Street, play outside, Lunch, Mastewal does her “lessons” and gets to watch a video, Tamirat naps, they play outside more, eat a snack, play outside more or play inside and listen to music, then wait for daddy to call, start hovering around the kitchen wondering “what’s for dinner” and when can I “sit at the table?” They are too funny. Myer has been a little fussier than usual–maybe it’s the combo of teething and getting over his cold–I don’t know.
Here are few more random pics.
Today we went to church for the first time as a family of five. It honestly went better than I imagined. Both Mastewal and Afton went to their classes. I was surprised. They seemed to enjoy themselves. We had lunch, I ran to the grocery, and then we went to the park. We had a lasagna dinner (thank you church family) and then Seth headed out for some quiet time while we (Mastewal, Afton, Myer and myself) listened to music. Kids then went to bed at their usual times.
Here’s to wonderful week number two! I hope to plan a few more daytime activities this week. We’ll see how it goes.

Today Myer and I went to the hospital to turn in labs for Mastewal and Afton Tamirat. I also ran into a couple of places. We had a pretty laid back day today. This evening we popped popcorn and watched a movie–everyone is now in bed or asleep (including Seth). Sometimes it’s really hard to unwind. I kind of wish I was able to sleep right now, but my mind races with all the things there are to do—but I sit here and blog instead.
This morning I woke up at 6am and started to get all the children “up and ready” for Mastewal and Afton’s doctor appointment to have their TB skin tests read at 8am. Surprisingly to me, it wasn’t too bad this time around. We were all ready to go at 6:45. The doctor appointment and travel went well with all three. I was doubting myself a little (this was my first outing with all three) but I did it. Once at the parking lot at St. Josephs, I put Myer in the baby bjorn, Afton in the stroller and Mastewal walked beside me. The nurses were excited to see the kids again, Mastewal was greeted by “silly girl”. They are treated really well there. We love our pediatrician and nurses there. While there, Myer coughed and the doctor noticed…she prescribed him some meds and canceled his immunization appointment for tomorrow. So tomorrow I will take Myer with me to turn in some samples to the lab for our infectious disease doctor. Hopefully, we’ll learn of all their parasites and get them taken care of soon.
We came back home and had a lazy day. Mastewal got to go to the park with our neighbor and her daughter this afternoon. I think she enjoys the company and it’s nice to have a kid in the neighborhood close to her age.
We also had a call from the infectious disease doctor. Thankfully, Mastewal does not have Hep B. We were a little worried about this since Monday. There were some inconsistencies with paperwork and it was taking longer to get the labs back, so we started to assume (along with the doctor) that she may have been positive for Hep B. We’re excited that her labs were negative. Now on to TB. She will need a chest x-ray now, I’m a little bummed about that, but we’ll just get it taken care of as soon as possible. We’re plugging away at things one day at a time.
I had my nightly outing of going to CVS to get a prescription filled. I also went by Stoked to get frozen mochas for us (me and Seth). They were wonderful and sometimes I just enjoy the ride and time by myself. It’s little time but it makes a difference.
Also–did I mention that Myer has two teeth now?

Some pics from our day trip to Debre Zeyit. We traveled there on Monday the 2nd with Emily and our driver Ayele. It was beautiful. We had lunch overlooking a lake, saw some birds and really just enjoyed ourselves.
Yesterday, (day two) went better than the first. We had some major incidents of Afton Tamirat falling on Myer because he just doesn’t look where he’s going. I guess Myer’s pretty tough, it only phased him for a couple of minutes and I see no battle wounds. We played outside all afternoon since the weather was nice. The kids played “going to work” and drove their meukinas (cars) all around the deck. They got hooked on this role play because they asked where daddy was and I told him that he works. So they wanted to go to work. We also played with bubbles and chased Roper around. We only had one meltdown today: Mastewal cried and pouted when she stepped in wusha caca (dog poop). I tried to tell her it was funny and that we just wash it off (i love crocs) but she wasn’t happy until I brought out the samuna and wuha (soap and water) She cleaned her shoes and we exchanged Amharic and English words because I really want her to keep using her Amharic. She would crack me up though, when I would ask her something that she didn’t know, she would say….I don’t know…..call Kaleb (our guesthouse manager and friend). Hilarious.
